Another favorite from childhood, I present the Chronicles of Prydain ~ means of Lloyd Alexander. Yes, there are frequent similarities to Tolkien, but that's as both were inspired by many of the same Welsh legends. Alexander's tales are considerably closer to the untranslated legends. These tales are beautifully inventive and very influential. The character Eilonwy, during the term of instance, is strikingly similar to Rowling's Hermione.
